Many people end up renting a storage unit that is actually much larger than they really need. However, since they don't know how to pack correctly, they generally end up needing to use all that extra space. You can learn a lot of tips and tricks when it comes to packing your storage unit that will allow you to go with a much smaller one and you may even find that you have room left over. Here are some of the things you can do to pack your storage unit efficiently:

Take apart your tables

Kitchen tables, coffee tables, and end tables can take up a lot of space in a storage unit because they are bulky and awkward to pack around. However, there is something that you can do to put them into the storage unit in a way that takes up a lot less space. Most tables can simply come apart by using a screwdriver or Allen wrench to remove the bolts.

Put them in a sealable baggy and tape the baggy to the underside of each table so you don't end up losing them. Wrap the tables in packing blankets so they don't get scratched up while they are being transported or while they are being stored.

Pack your mirrors and pictures between soft items

Most people end up wrapping their mirrors and pictures in thick protective material such as moving blankets or bubble wrap. Then, they need to stick them somewhere where they will be less likely to be broken. Sometimes the areas where they store them will then be kept free of other items and this leaves a lot of wasted space. A much easier way to protect these items while taking up a lot less room in the unit is to stick them between soft items that are already free standing. They can't get broken and they won't use up any extra room.

Use vacuum sealed bags for fluffy items

You can use vacuum sealed bags for fluffy things like bedspreads and stuffed animals. The bags will be emptied of air, along with the items that are put in them. This causes them to get quite flat. You can toss them on top of boxes or squeeze them in other empty areas in the unit.

Fit awkward items in empty spaces

If you have a desk lamp you can put it in the refrigerator. If you have some awkward vases you can fit them inside of the oven. By fitting your awkward items in places that would otherwise be wasted, you can save room and keep them safe.
