Self-storage is used for a number of reasons. Storage units are offered in a variety of sizes to accommodate you and your needs, so if you need a unit just for seasonal items you don't have room for in your house, or to store your boat, there's a storage unit for you. Making the most out of your space is important though, as it could save you money by not having to get a larger unit (which can cost you more money). See below for tips to get the most out of your storage unit.

Pack Wisely

Pack your belongings in like-sized boxes so you can stack them easier. Invest in newer boxes that won't sink into one another when you stack them. Ask the storage facility about purchasing boxes through them. Stack the heavier items on the bottom and lighter items at the top. Stack them as tall as you can without worry of them falling over. Write the contents on the boxes so they can be found easily when needed and be specific. Also be sure to write if the boxes are fragile so you don't place these boxes at the bottom of a stack. Fragile items should be packed with packing peanuts, bubble wrap or something else to help protect them.

Weed Out What You Don't Need

To help fit all of your belongings in your unit, go through your things and weed out what you no longer need or want. Start making piles while packing - one pile to donate, one to toss and another to keep. Make space and clear out things you no longer need.

Invest In A Storage System

Use a storage system such as shelves or hangers for your belongings to get them up off of the floor and out of the way. This will help you if you plan on going back for items often, as you can get to your belongings a little easier. Hanging storage is a great way to store thing such as gardening or landscape tools to keep them out of the way. Other hangers such as a bike or kayak hanger are also helpful.

Create Aisles

Create aisles throughout your storage unit so you can easily get to the back or around the sides. You should have a main aisle through the middle and then space around the sides as well. Also the extra space in between helps allow air to flow through your unit and prevents moisture from ruining your belongings.

You are renting a storage unit for a reason, so make the most out of the space you have to ensure you can fit all of your belongings inside.
